AMS1117 3.3V 1A Regulator Power Supply Circuit
The AMS1117-3.3V module is a voltage regulator circuit board with overheat protection functions. It can convert an input voltage range of 4.8V to 10.3V DC at 1A of current to a fixed +3.3V DC output.
This can serve as an additional power supply for various electronic components, circuit boards, or power the LEDs (up to a maximum of 3 watts).
Here, we will discuss and explain the workings of this compact DC-DC regulator power supply along with its circuit diagram.

Working Explanation
The main component of this regulated power supply module circuit is the AMS1117-3.3 SOT-223 intregrated circuit (U1). The working principle of this AMS1117 series IC involves regulating the input DC voltage and maintaining a constant positive 3.3V DC output.

The minimum DC power (approx. 1.5V and 10mA) supplied to the VIN pin of the regulator IC (U1) is sufficient to activate it.
An LED (D1) is connected between the VIN pin and ground with a series current limiting resistor (R1) work as a power-on indicator.
Two parallel ceramic capacitors (C1 & C2) connected between the VIN pin and the GND (ground) pin of the IC (U1) help stabilize the input voltage and filter out any noise or voltage fluctuations.
When the voltage received at the VIN pin of the IC (U1) exceeds 4.3V, the excess voltage is passed through the GND pin to the ground to convert it into heat, which is then dissipated through the PCB body. Unlike PNP type regulators where up to 10% of the output current is wasted as quiescent current. This process helps maintain the +3.3V (fixed) output at the VOUT pin.
If the ams1117-3.3 IC becomes too hot (>125°C) due to overload or high ambient temperatures, it activates an internal thermal protection circuit by cutting off the IC's input supply. In the event of a short circuit occurring at the output, the internal circuitry of the AMS1117-3.3 limits the current to prevent damage to the power supply circuit.

To ensure a stable and clean 3.3V 1A power output, another two parallel ceramic capacitors (C3 & C4) are used to further filter any remaining noise from the output voltage.
Hi, the AMS1117 Input voltage is up to 15V (and not 10.3V as you mentioned) - here is it's datasheet: http://www.advanced-monolithic.com/pdf/ds1117.pdf
ReplyDeleteAccording to the Advanced Monolithic Systems (AMS) Datasheet for the Linear AMS1117-3.3V SOT223 Regulator IC, the best operational electrical characteristic condition is when 4.8V ≤ Vin ≤ 10.3V, 10mA ≤ Iin ≤ 1A, and -20℃ ≤ Tj ≤ 125℃. We have attached the official AMS-Semitech datasheet PDF link in the post above; you can download it to learn more.
